Australia Profiles > Peter Siddle
Peter Siddle
- Date of Birth: 25.12.1984
- Domestic Team: Victoria
- Bats: Right-hand
- Bowls: Right arm fast medium
With his fiery approach to opposing batsmen and a desire to bowl all day, Siddle can rightly be considered the latest uncompromising Aussie seamer to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Craig McDermott and Merv Hughes.
Although not intimidating in either size or stature, the 25-year-old Victorian is not to be underestimated by opponents.
His willingness to run through a brick wall for his country has seen him quickly become a hero with the fans.
But he is more than just an honest grafter, as he showed in the last Ashes series when his record of 20 wickets at 30s was bettered only by Ben Hilfenhaus.
Injuries blighted Siddle's early career, but he soon established himself in state cricket before getting the call-up to the Australia squad.
The right-armer made his Test debut in India - not exactly an easy beginning for a seamer - and gave an early warning to the hosts by hitting Gautam Gambhir on the head with his very first delivery.
Overlooked for the rest of the series in the sub-continent, Siddle was drafted back into the side to face the South Africans on home soil.
Although he couldn't prevent the Proteas winning 2-1, he helped the Australians gain instant revenge in the return series, taking 11 wickets in the wins in Johannesburg and Durban.
That secured his place in the side for the 2009 Ashes series, but injuries have taken their toll again since then.
He hasn't played Test cricket since January, and his first-choice status is no longer secure.
It looks a tall order to leapfrog Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus or Doug Bollinger in the pecking order, while 'new McGrath' Peter George is also in the frame.
With competition for fast-bowling spots looking fierce, Siddle's best chance of another crack at the old enemy may come if Australia opt for a four-man pace attack and leave out spinner Nathan Hauritz.
