The Open Championship returns to Royal Birkdale for the first time in 10 years. Were we look at some of the best - and worst - incidents on the Southport links.

1991

Britain's Richard Boxall broke his leg during the third round. His follow-through on his drive at the par-four ninth was so hard it fractured his left leg and he had to be carried from the course on a stretcher.

1991

Australian Ian Baker-Finch won the Claret Jug with a record-breaking score for the final 36 holes. Baker-Finch shot 64 on Saturday to move into a share of the lead and followed that with a 66 - including a front nine of 29 - to win by two strokes.

1983

One of the famous strokes on the links did not even make contact with the ball. Hale Irwin lost to Tom Watson by one 25 years ago after having an air shot when he went to tap in a short two-inch putt on the 14th in the third round.

1983

England's Denis Durnian set the Open record for nine holes with a six-under 28 on the second day. However, a third-round 74 ruined his chances and he eventually finished in a tie for eighth.

1976

Seve Ballesteros began the final day with a two-shot lead but by the turn he was trailing Johnny Miller by three and four holes later that advantage was eight. With victory beyond him the 19-year-old Spaniard needed to birdie the last to tie with Jack Nicklaus for second and he recovered his composure brilliantly, chipping up between the two bunkers and holing his putt.

1961

Arnold Palmer won his first Open which had been full of drama and controversy after a whole day's play was lost when gale-force winds brought down marquees on the course. Organisers said the championship had to end the next day, whether four rounds had been completed or not. In the third round Palmer's spectacular rescued shot with a six iron from behind a bush at the 16th hole - then the 15th - helped the American to a 69 on his way to one-shot win. A plaque was erected on the hole to mark the feat.

1954 & 1965

The Open was held at Birkdale for the first time and it was memorable for Peter Thomson, who won his maiden Claret Jug. Needing a five at the last to claim the clubhouse lead he found a bunker. However, a superb recovery got him close enough to the hole to get down in two and when Bobby Locke could not make three to force a play-off the title was Thomson's. He would return to the course in 1965 to win his fifth and final Open Championship, his second shot to the 510-yard 17th in the final round hitting the flag at a time when he was just one ahead
