Despite a suffering from a bout of food poisoning, causing him to lose around three kilograms in weight, GB's Michael Rimmer secured his place in the men's 800m semi-finals.
The 22-year-old from Liverpool battled hard to the line to guarantee automatic qualification. He won his heat in 1:47:61 seconds.
"I felt quite rough. I think it was a mix between the food poisoning and nerves. I am over it but I felt a little flat out there," said Rimmer.
"The thought of going out in a heat is horrible. I want to feel the plane ticket was worth the money and show I am worthy of being here."
World indoor champion Abubaker Kaki of Sudan and defending champion Yuriy Borzakovskiy of Russia both safely advanced to the semi-finals.
