Britain kept their medal hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over rock-bottom South Africa at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium.

James Tindall, the villain in the 1-0 defeat to Holland two-days ago, made up for his costly foul with his best performance of the tournament and a superbly-taken goal.

The hard-working forward had been the man whose rash challenge handed the Dutch a late penalty corner from which they scored their undeserved winner and dented GB's chances of making the semi-finals.

But he showed the class which has made him one of the Premier Division's best strikers with a clinical chip in the 21st minute. Club-mate Matt Daly added the second with four minutes to go.

Britain remain in third place in pool b after reigning champions Australia and the Netherlands both picked maintained their 100 per cent record.

Inspired

Australia almost certainly ended Pakistan's hopes with a 3-1 win in pool B despite Shakeel Abbasi's stunning reverse hit opening goal in the 16th minute.

Grant Schubert drew level four minutes later and Jamie Dwyer gave the Hockeyroos the lead six minutes into the second session before Travis Brooks increased the margin in the 59th minute.

The Netherlands, losing finalists at Athens, joined Australia at the top of the pool with a 4-2 win over Canada inspired by a hat-trick from penalty corner ace Taeke Taekema.

In pool A, a below-par Spain did just enough to beat hosts China 2-1, while New Zealand kept their hopes alive by ousting Belgium 4-2 for their second win in three matches.
