Amir Khan has the chance to put himself back on track for a showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr when he faces Lamont Peterson live on Sky Sports on 19 May.

On Saturday Miguel Cotto fights in the bout all the welterweights want - a Las Vegas date with the pound-for-pound king. And if Khan can get revenge for his December defeat to Peterson he will once again be on the path for a meeting with Mayweather.

The reigning WBC welterweight champion is the big favourite ahead of his Saturday night clash with Cotto.

However, the Puerto Rican hard man is a tough fight for anybody. He's an outstanding champion, he's a great fighter in his own right and he's got everything to fight for. But for how many people is getting the fight with Mayweather the real prize?

When you fight Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao you get the big bucks, you get the celebrity status and, for many, that is prize enough.

We need somebody to come along and say: 'I don't care about money, I care about smashing them up'. I hope Cotto will come with that attitude. He could and should give Mayweather a test. He's a very good fighter. He's solid, technically good and he hits hard. But I feel Cotto knows his place in history, and his place is behind Mayweather.

Mayweather at the moment seems to have the game tied up. He's got a tremendous record and has never really put a foot wrong. In the past he's always been well prepared. He leaves nothing to chance, lives well and trains hard, even when he's not got a fight lined up. He's an amazing boxing professional.

However, he has a prison sentence hanging over him and if he hasn't done the work or is thinking of other things - such as going to jail - then he could lose. The only person who will beat Mayweather on Saturday night is Mayweather himself, though - not Cotto.

I'm predicting a comfortable points victory for Mayweather. I expect him to outbox Cotto and produce a solid win. He'll marshal the fight and I'm certainly not expecting a fight of the decade.

No Way Out

Khan v Peterson Part Two - now that has potential to be fight of the decade!

First of all let me say, I'm a massive Amir Khan fan. I love the kid, I think he's fantastic and I admire him - but I think he just hasn't given Peterson enough credit for the great job and outstanding performance he gave in December.

Peterson came out of nowhere. He had nothing given to him, he had to fight for everything and you can see it means so much to him. I think Amir thought he was just turning up, and Peterson proved them all wrong.

It was a close fight - maybe Khan pipped it - but it was by no means the robbery the Khan camp thought it was. That's where their problem lies, they think they should have won and they don't realise what a massive battle they've got on 19 May.

This kids wants it. Peterson went out there like a maniac and fought a terrific fight, brought fire to the game, brought intensity to the ring and passion to the battle. I love him for that. What says he can't do it again? I think Khan is going to have to bring everything in his arsenal and keep that chin down. Peterson has a tremendous chance of pulling it off again.

Hopefully khan has done all the hard work, learnt his lessons and taken himself to the well in training. He has to go into that fight humble and with the attitude of a challenger. But I think he's in for a really tough fight and my tip for this one is Peterson.

What next for Khan?

If Khan does lose to Peterson then it's not the end of the road for him. There are fighters like Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander out there he could face. The welterweights and light-welterweights are terrific divisions and he can come again - we all remember how he bounced back from the Bredis Prescott knock out.

However, if he wins then he's King Khan again and it's onwards and upwards to a super fight with Mayweather.

It's all eyes on the prize - and the prize is a date with Floyd in Vegas.
