Padraig Harrington retained his Open title with a magnificent finish at Royal Birkdale.
But it was a also a good week for Greg Norman, who rolled back the (many) years to show that the old dog can still mix it with the young pups.
Ian Poulter's disappointment at finishing second will be tempered by the thought that he has probably earned himself a return to the Ryder Cup team in September.
Bristol amateur Chris Wood almost matched Justin Rose's feat of 10 years ago, finishing fifth, while Ryder Cup stars Paul Casey and David Howell hinted at a welcome return to form with top 10 finishes.

Pod's 5 wood on 17 should go down as one of the best shots ever - on TV. Jack's 1 Iron in the US Open and Tiger's in the dark 8-iron to the 18th at Bayhill being the other two.

Well done to Padraig and indeed all of the players to give us all so much pleasure ,when you look at the antics of some of the modern day soccer players is in it just great to watch true sportmen playing.

I reckon the tornament wasn't devalued as tiger wasn't a cert to win (would of been the favourite but that obviously doesn't mean everything). Fair play to harrington to push his game to another level. Not sure i entirely agree with the comment 'not being able to play in the wind'. i can imagine a few instances which disagree with this. Also have faith in poulter to win at least 1 major, seems to have the right mentality.

Well done Padraig. Tiger was there last year and you beat him so noone can say if only the Tiger was there. Tiger won the US Open on one leg and you won the British Open with one arm so look out the rest when your both fully fit. 3 words to describe you Magnificent. Superb. Stunning.

Behave George.......Yes PH was awsome and deserved to win, but he didnt beat Tiger Woods!! I aint saying that Tiger would have won, but we will never know. Yes it's a test of Physical ability, and Tiger Proved his by winning the US Open with only one good leg!! Well done Padraig, a fantastic closing speech aswell!

absolutely class performance from harrington. he did us irsh proud. now he must rank among the greatest irish athletes of all time after becoming our first two time winner of a major. a great achievement from a really genuinely nice guy. may not be the most naturally talented golfer in the world but nobody puts in more effort and work at improving his game than pod. his will to win and attitude is just fantastic. great to see greg reeling back the years out there and a great performance from poulter too. a great open with a worthy winner

Well done Padraig. And he did beat TW, who was not there due to a physical weakness - its a Sport afterall, which includes a test of physical ability. .

Well played by Padraig. An excellent closing round, once again showing his mettle coming from behind. Disagree that the event was devalued by Woods being unavailable - he would have struggled as he always does when the wind blows. Shame on Greg Norman but whether he is 53 or not, he had another very poor last round in a Major so the old choke tag lives on. Glad Poulter didn't win - too much style and not enough substance/consistency. I'm sure he'll shift a few more jerseys on the back of it though, but he'll never win a Major.

What a tournament! Golf above all came out on top. Harrington was in total control on the back nine and had a different gear when needed. It was a very Tiger-like performance in the majors. He will defintely win another couple of majors now. Guess who has the best record against Tiger when paired with him in the last group? Padraig Harrington! Top 3 in world now, winning 2 of the last 5 majors. Congrats!

congratulations to padraig but of course its devalued without the greatest golfer ever to walk the earth. i bet he looked at +3 and thought he would able to beat that score with his ability. would wimbledon be devalued without federer,(yes) the world cup without brazil(yes) the premiership without united(yes), they are not certain to win but these competitions are not the same with the best missing

If there was any doubt before there certainly isn't now, Padraig Harrington is easily the best European Golfer of the last 10 Years. He has what others don't, plenty on bottle!

A great win for Padraig and a win for golf too in my opinion. It disappoints me to see players at -10, -15, it tells me the course isn't hard enough for these guys. But the course and weather tested everyone this week and 'real' scores were posted. When someone played a top shot, you knew it was a top shot. Well done again Padraig a top win in difficult conditions.

Being a fellow Irishman made this victory very sweet! Last year he became the 1st Irish winner in god knows how long and to go and do it again in such convincing fashion was simply brilliant!! Padraig the whole of the country are proud of you CONGRATS!!!! and hopefully you will be a major part in the defense of the Ryder Cup!!

Forget TW. The way Padraig played the last three holes was absolute world class and he was so deserving of the Championship. From what I've seen of him this week, ranking points be damned, he has to be one of the top three in the world, making a good arguement for No. 2.
