Phil Mickelson recovered from a final round of 76 to claim victory in the HSBC Champions event in Shanghai following a three-man play-off.

The American dropped six shots in the last 11 holes of regulation play to blow a five-stroke lead over Ross Fisher, but a double-bogey at the last from the Englishman and a bogey from Mickelson saw them fall to 10-under and a tie with Lee Westwood.

The latter had carded a round-of-the-day 67 in difficult conditions to storm up the leaderboard, but even he would have been surprised to see the capitulation of the leaders.

Missed chances

However, he was unable to take advantage as all three missed birdie chances at the first extra hole before Westwood dumped his approach in the water at the second.

And when Fisher was unable to get up-and-down from a bunker, it was left to Mickelson to hole out from four feet to clinch the $833,300 first prize and his first title outside the United States in 14 years.

Kevin Stadler claimed fourth place outright just one shot out of the play-off but it was a bad day for Paul Casey, who played in the final group but fired a 78 to slip to five under par.
