Celtic Dragons is the only invited side taking part in the Netball Superleague, and is an extension of Welsh Netball.
Based in Cardiff at the Welsh Institute of Sport, and supported by the Sports Council of Wales, the squad is made up of predominantly Welsh senior internationals complimented by a number of elite athletes from England.
The franchise was a new venture at the start of the Superleague and provides an ideal opportunity for Welsh players to compete at the highest level and improve their skills and performance, which will hopefully be reflected when the players represent Wales.
The Celtic Dragons finished bottom of the Superleague, on goal difference, in its inaugural year. Highly- regarded coach Jess Garland has joined the Dragons this season and is using her extensive coaching and playing experience to good effect.
The Dragons’ results this year have improved and Jess is confident that the squad will make significant breakthroughs in the not too distant future.
The introduction of youth matches this season has also provided opportunities for talented young players to experience high level competition as well. Many of the players who will represent Wales in the Netball Europe Age Group Competitions have played in the youth matches and it has had an immediate impact on the quality of their play.
Welsh Netball knows that its future lies with young players. As a result Dragons’ players go out into the community to deliver coaching sessions. Players have visited a number of schools across South Wales and have also been part of initiatives such as the Festival of Netball at the Millennium Stadium and the up and coming Big Weekend of Netball.
