It has been a breakthrough year for French Open champion Schiavone, although a serious assault on the US Open title looks too much to ask.
In what will be her 12th visit to Flushing Meadows, a quarter-final appearance back in 2003 remains her best run to date.
None of her four WTA titles has come on the hardcourts and despite her famous triumph in Paris, her form heading into the final major of the year is poor.
Since becoming the second-oldest first-time winner of a Grand Slam title in the Open era, the Italian has suffered first-round exits at Eastbourne, Wimbledon and Cincinnati. She is also currently without a coach.
However, her classic, one-handed backhand is something you can't learn from the manual.
