  • Became Pro: 2003

Almagro - prefers the clay.

Player Profile

Known for his ferocious groundstrokes from the baseline, the Spaniard is having a season to remember.

Almagro's uncompromising style has paid dividends this summer and the right-hander - after claiming two titles in a month - is closing in on a career-high ranking position.

A battling win over Swedish favourite and world number five Robin Soderling secured his first title of the year in Bastad and he was celebrating more success a fortnight later when he overcame Richard Gasquet in the final of the Allianz Swiss Open in Gstaad.

Almagro, regarded as a claycourt specialist, has a poor record at the US Open, having never made it past the third round.

The Murcian, who is one of the few on tour to still use a one-handed backhand, is nevertheless one the top stars will be keen to avoid early in the draw at Flushing Meadows.
