It's well known that Sharapova sprang to prominence with victory at Wimbledon in 2004 when just 17.
However, it should also be remembered that the blonde bombshell won at Flushing Meadows in 2006, while she's since claimed the Australian Open crown.
Strangely though she has yet to return to the last 16 here since lifting the trophy.
A big reason for that is her frail body. Injuries have sadly hit Sharapova over the years - a shoulder problem has been the biggest issue as it has affected her once fearsome serve. Were it not for injury, she would surely have won more Grand Slams.
However, she arrives in New York with high hopes of landing a fourth title at the top level.
Sharapova made the final of the warm-up event in Cincinnati, only losing to Kim Clijsters after holding three match points, and with big guns Serena Williams and Justine Henin out injured, she will fancy her chances of going all the way again.
