The Belgian was given a wildcard entry into the 2010 Australian Open after nearly two years away from the court and almost made a fairytale return.
Despite showing glimpses of the form that has seen her win seven Grand Slam titles, a showdown with Serena Williams in the final proved a step too far.
She would go on to win two events on the WTA Tour during the year, but her run in Melbourne was by far the best she was able to manage in any of the major tournaments.
Injury then brought an abrupt end to her campaign, with Henin forced to sit out the rest of the year after injuring her elbow at Wimbledon.
Now the former world number one, who won the Australian Open in 2004, will be hoping that the lay-off has not had any adverse effects on her game.
If Henin has retained her trademark quickness and can get into a rhythm on her lethal one-handed backhand, she must be viewed as one of the favourites.
