Twenty20 fears

Gloucestershire skipper Jon Lewis reveals his fear for playing too much Twenty20 cricket.

Still frustrated after their opening Pro40 match was rained off at Old Trafford, Lewis is a fan of the Pro40 tournament and knows how important a good start is.

I like the Pro40 as a competition; I think it is crowd friendly," said Lewis.

"I understand why they are thinking of axing it because you need to play parallel competitions with international cricket. But I like it has a competition, it is a shorter game and the middle period of the game can sometimes get a bit slow but it is cut down and is very fast for the first 15 and then the last ten -- there is only a short period in the middle.

"You want to get off to a good start in the Pro40, there are only eight games so it is good to get off to a sprint, and unfortunately rain has scuppered our start."

From 2010, teams will play more Twenty20 cricket, however Lewis is not sure how he feels about that.

"I think I am happy about that, I am very conscious that we don't want to overkill Twenty20. I was listening to the great man Shane Warne who was saying the same thing and he has got a point.

"If we push it too hard I think people will get bored of it, so we have to be clever the way we market it."

Lewis also remembers Andrew Symonds playing for Gloucestershire and said that although he was a raw 18-year old kid, he always had something special

"We both started at the same time and he was a bit of a wild one back then. I think he still is now, but he is a fantastic player and to get him back to play some Twenty20 would be great for Gloucestershire,

"He was a really talented cricketer. I think in his first game he got a 100 against Surrey at the Oval. He was a bit raw and sometimes a bit dumb about the shots he played.

"I remember an interview after he got one of his first 100's for Australia. Tony Greig asked him what happened had he turned over a new leaf, and Symonds just said that he had got a bit smarter.

"He would play some amazing cricket shots and then go and do something really stupid."
