Former England batsman Allan Lamb believes that the balance of the current England side is wrong and selectors must pick six specialist batsmen for the third Test against South Africa at Edgbaston.

"The selectors have got to work out what they want here," said Lamb on Sky Sports News.

"At the moment I think we need an extra batter in that top six. If they go back to Collingwood, hopefully he will come back to into nick.

"Otherwise it is very hard on Pattinson and you can't put all the blame onto him.

"He did okay but I think they were expecting him to run in and get five wickets in each innings."

Lamb who scored 4656 runs in 79 Tests also said that Andrew Flintoff should not be chosen as England's all-rounder.

"We all know what Fred can do with his bowling, but his big problem is with the batting at the moment," said Lamb.

"He looked very good and he batted for over an hour with Ambrose in the second Test.

"He was playing correctly and then all of a sudden the new ball came and he went.

"But England have not picked him as a batter, they have picked him as a bowler

"Stuart Boad was a proper batter, more of a batter than a bowler. It was only in the later days of his schooldays that he became a bowler.

"I think he could be a genuine all-rounder and he could be batting seven for England."
